I got hugs for my family
(I hold my breath when I hug)
and high fives for my friends
(when I’m wearing my gloves)
I’ll shake your hand handily
When this flu season ends

Back in the day when the fever was hay
and the aches and the pains just came and went away
and the sneezing and coughing was due to the dust
and the throb in your head wasn’t ER or bust
I had a hug and a squeeze for anyone who said please
I had a kiss and a shake, I broke bread, I shared cake
I drank from the glasses of laddies and lasses
and I’d laugh in the faces of kids in my classes
and I’d let ‘em all laugh in mine, and no sign
of the flu would deter me; no one would refer me
to the nurse or the doctor. I’d even high five the proctors
of the tests that I’d take and after that, hey, no aches!
But, man, times have changed, and stuff’s rearranged
and the flu’s like the mange and now everything’s strange
I can’t kiss you or hug you and I know that it bugs you
but I’m just being cautious; I don’t want to feel nauseous
and throw up, you know what? I still want to grow up
I still want to show up, Now my voice gonna go up ...

I got hugs for my family
(I hold my breath when I hug)
and high fives for my friends
(when I’m wearing my gloves)
I’ll shake your hand handily
When this flu season ends

So now that I’ve donned these gloves I’ve got on
and rolled down my sleeves I don’t have to be skeeved
or be careful. Nightmareful if my hands touched a hairful
or a handful of germs from your lifeline or perm;
And I waited and waited but I heard a whole lot
I should get vaccinated with a trivalent shot
Oh no, quadrivalent, to fight the assailant
Yeah, I got an earful from my mom, made me fearful
Now I’m only hugging and kissing my immediate family
Not even my uncle, not even my auntie
So don’t be insulted, You’re lucky you see me
at school now at all as I dash down the hall,
sprayin’ my locker each day with anti-bacterial spray,
and anti-microbials, keep the virus at bay
And it’s scary, alarming, it’s crazy, this flu
So I’m arming myself with this armor, it’s true
Maybe I’m overreacting, but my mom got me worried
so into my sanitized house now I’ll scurry
and they say better safe than sorry, but are we
taking it too far? My mom says, No, hardly.

I got hugs for my family
(I hold my breath when I hug)
and high fives for my friends
(when I’m wearing my gloves)
I’ll shake your hand handily
(and heartily too)
When this flu season ends
(I’m saving hugs just for you)

Not quite a pandemic so calm down, don’t sweat it
I just hope that nobody I know’s gonna get it
or give it to anyone else or to me
I can’t wait for the summer when to hug we’ll be free
and the sneezin’ we do will be due to the pollen
and near ocean or lake, on the sand we’ll be lollin’
But for now I’ll stay covered and cover my nose
and my mouth and be careful and safe, I suppose
Yeah, life can be scary, but we’re in it together
whether it’s heavy as a brick or as light as a feather
And whether it’s through leather or wool or whatever
a hug from someone you love can make you feel better
A high five from a friend can make you feel safer for longer,
the long and the short’s that together we’re stronger

I got hugs for my family
(I hold my breath when I hug)
and high fives for my friends
(when I’m wearing my gloves)
I’ll shake your hand handily
(and heartily too)
When this flu season ends
(I’m saving hugs just for you)

I got hugs for my family
(I hold my breath when I hug)
and high fives for my friends
(when I’m wearing my gloves)
I’ll shake your hand handily
(and heartily too)
When this flu season ends
(I’m saving hugs just for you)
